Kedarnath
Perched at an altitude of 3,583 m, Kedarnath is one of the most holy temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Set against the majestic backdrop of snow-capped mountains and nestled beside the Mandakini River, the temple stands as a symbol of unwavering faith and devotion. It is believed that the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva here to absolve themselves of their sins of the Mahabharata war. When Lord Shiva tried to avoid them, he transformed into a bull and dived into the ground with his hump appearing in Kedarnath. The remaining parts of his body appear at four other places, forming the Panch Kedar. Kedarnath temple is a place of worship and a test of endurance and determination. The trek to Kedarnath is challenging yet soul-stirring with scenic trails, pine forests, glacial streams, and chants of “Har Har Mahadev” echoing through the valley. For those unable to trek, helicopter services are also available, making the shrine accessible for all.

Badrinath
Set at 3,300 m, Badrinath is one of the most revered Lord Vishnu temples in India. It is a part of both the Char Dham and Chota Char Dham circuits. According to legend, Lord Vishnu meditated here for thousands of years under a Badri tree, while Goddess Lakshmi shielded him in harsh weather in the form of this Badri tree. Today, the colourful Badrinath Temple stands by the gushing Alaknanda River with the twin mountains Nar and Narayan standing sentinel behind it. The temple is not just about rituals; it is about the spiritual atmosphere, the chants of priests, the smell of incense, and the sight of ‘sadhus’ who have walked barefoot from distant lands. Surrounded by mystical peaks and thermal springs, Badrinath fills your heart with tranquility and relevance.
Highlights
- Badrintah Temple: This temple is a colourful facade with deep spiritual significance. The black stone image of Lord Badrinarayan, made of Shaligram stone in the Alaknanda River, was discovered by Adi Shankaracharya.
- Tapt Kund: It is a natural hot spring where devotees bathe before darshan. This spring is believed to have medicinal properties and legends say that taking a dip here cleanses sins.
- Brahma Kapal: This Kapal is located on the banks of the Alaknanda River. It is a sacred spot for performing ancestral rites.
- Mana Village: This is the last Indian village before the Indo-Tibetan border, which is rich in mythology and cultural heritage. It is known as the village of sages.
- Vyas Gufa: This is an ancient cave that is associated with sage Vyasa and it is believed that he wrote the Mahabharata here.
