Introduction
Among the holiest of all pilgrimages in India, the Chardham Yatra holds a revered place in the hearts of millions. This sacred expedition to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath is about experiencing divinity in its purest form amidst the majestic Himalayas. These four dhams represent the four pillars of Hindu faith: devotion, purification, liberation, and compassion. Undertaking this journey is believed to wash away sins, dissolve ego, and guide one toward moksha.
- Yamunotri: Yamunotri is a significant Hindu pilgrimage dedicated to the goddess Yamuna (the daughter of Surya, the Sun God and sister of Yama) and considered the origin of the Yamuna River. It is believed that taking blessings from the intricately carved idol of Goddess Yamuna in polished black ebony in the temple and a holy dip in the river cleanses sins and takes away the fear of untimely death.
- Gangotri: Located at an altitude of 3,200m, this site is deeply intertwined with Hindu mythology and considered the origin of the River Ganga, represented by Goddess Ganga. It is believed that King Bhagiratha brought Goddess Ganga to Earth to purify the ashes of his ancestors. Thousands of pilgrims for centuries have visited here, with Lord Rama and Hanuman also believed to have visited here.
- Kedarnath: Kedarnath is the most revered and one of the 12 Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is linked to the Pandavas, who are looking for Lord Shiva’s forgiveness after the Mahabharata war. Lord Shiva transformed himself into a bull and disappeared in Kedarnath, leaving the hump which is still worshipped as the temple’s sanctum. This pilgrimage is considered the most holy place to seek liberation.
- Badrinath: Considered as the most revered Hindu pilgrimage site and part of the Char Dham circuit, Badrinath is dedicated to Lord Badrinarayan, a form of Vishnu. There are various legends about the temple, including that Lord Vishnu meditated here in the harsh Himalayan climate, and Goddess Lakshmi protected him by transforming into a Badri tree. Another story is of the Pandavas passing through on their way to heaven. This temple is also one of the 108 Divya Desams, sacred Vishnu temples.
