Overview
The 5 Days Gangtok & Darjeeling Tour Package links two iconic destinations of the hill in the Eastern Himalayas with a compact itinerary that encompasses important attractions at both destinations. This five-day journey splits time between the capital of Sikkim and the most famous hill station of West Bengal, offering exposure to Buddhist culture, colonial heritage and Himalayan landscapes.
The tour starts from New Jalpaiguri Railway Station or Bagdogra Airport both in the Siliguri corridor. From these transit points the journey to Gangtok is about 120 kilometers through winding mountain roads, from the plains to an elevation of 1,650 meters. Gangtok serves as the base for the first two nights, as we explore the city and high-altitude attractions of the area.
Tsomgo Lake is a major excursion from Gangtok, which is 12,400 feet in height and almost 40 kilometers from the city. This glacial formation retains its oval shape, one kilometer wide and 50 feet deep. The surface of the lake is frozen during winter months, while summer brings migratory bird species including Brahmini ducks. The road to Tsomgo goes through several ecological zones which exhibit different mountain flora. Adjacent to the lake is Baba Mandir, a memorial to Harbhajan Singh who served in the Indian Army. The shrine is visited by military personnel and civilians alike.
Gangtok city sightseeing includes several cultural and natural sites. The Research Institute of Tibetology has vast collections of Buddhist manuscripts, thangkas, and religious objects. Do Drul Chorten, built in 1945, contains prayer wheels and sacred relics within its construction. Enchey Monastery represents the Nyingma Buddhism tradition and also holds annual masked dance ceremonies. The Directorate of Handicrafts & Handloom displays traditional Sikkimese crafts such as hand-woven textiles and carved wooden objects. Nam Nang viewpoint and Barthang waterfalls are natural scenic stops en route on the circuit of the city.
The transfer from Gangtok to Darjeeling is a tea-growing region through mountain settlements. The city of Darjeeling is located at an elevation of 2,050 meters and established its reputation during the British colonial rule for tea culture and temperate climate. The town offers Victorian-era architecture and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway – a narrow-gauge railroad that is a World Heritage Site.
Tiger Hill offers the signature Darjeeling experience through pre-dawn sunrise viewing. Located at 8,400 feet this viewpoint offers sight lines to Kanchenjunga and other peaks in the Himalayas, though visibility depends on weather conditions. The return journey passes through Ghoom Monastery, founded in 1875 as one of the oldest Tibetan Buddhist places in the region and Batasia Loop, where the toy train takes a round of gardens and a war memorial.
