Overview
Northeast India’s hidden gem, Meghalaya, shows its nature with a small but comprehensive four-day exploration. This Meghalaya Travel Package includes the must-see highlights of the state, right from the urban vibe of Shillong to the record rainfall zones of Cherrapunji, providing an efficient way of introducing travellers to one of the most scenic regions of India.
The journey begins at Guwahati, which brings you to Northeast India and transfers to Shillong by the gorgeous mountain roads. The first stop is the Umiam Lake, a man-made reservoir surrounded by lush green hills, which offers water sports to the visitors. Shillong, nicknamed the “Scotland of the East”, with its pleasant weather and well-preserved colonial architecture, is the base for this tour. An evening tour at Police Bazaar gives an insight into local lifestyles with bustling markets that sell traditional handicrafts, woollen clothes, and regional produce.
Day two sees travelers go to Mawlynnong, the cleanest village in India, where community-driven hygienic practices have turned this small village into a model for sustainable living. The village includes a Living Root Bridge, an amazing example of indigenous engineering where ficus tree roots have been coaxed over the course of decades into creating a bridge over streams. A rare natural phenomenon is a boulder balanced precariously on another rock, and this is defying the laws of conventional physics.
The journey further goes to Dawki, which is located at the boundary of Indo-Bangladesh, where the Umgnot River flows so clear that boats seem suspended in the air. This crystal-clear water makes the boating experience a surreal one and is one of the most photographed attractions in Meghalaya.
Cherrapunji takes up the third day with all its waterfalls and caves that illustrate the geological diversity of the area. Nohkalikai Falls, the world’s tallest plunge waterfall in India, Nohkalikai Falls plunges into a green pool in a lush forest canopy. Nohsngithiang Falls (Seven Sisters Falls) is a popular destination for viewing seven different streams that come together to run over limestone cliffs. The Mawsmai Cave gives the visitors an opportunity to walk through the naturally formed passages of the cave that have stalactite and stalagmite formations. Eco Park and Thangkharang Park provide privileged views of the valleys below, while Dainthlen Falls boasts local legends in its name.
The day ends with a return to Shillong with a stop at Elephanta Falls, a three-tiered waterfall amidst fern-covered rocks. Shillong Peak gives the best vista point in the area with sunset views across the Khasi Hills.
The last day allows for extra Shillong sightseeing in case time runs out before leaving. The Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures has a vast collection of material on the traditions and lifestyles of the various tribal communities of Northeast India. Ward’s Lake is a horseshoe-shaped water body with a peaceful boating experience between manicured gardens. The Cathedral Catholic Church is an architectural landmark, and Lady Hydari Park is filled with Japanese-style landscaping and a small zoo.
This Meghalaya Holiday Package comprises comfortable twin or triple sharing accommodations with daily breakfast, air-conditioned vehicles for all transfers, and inner line permits for some of the restricted areas.
