Itinerary Highlights
- Munnar:
Draped in rolling hills and tea plantations, feels like a world suspended in mist and magic. It is Kerala’s answer to a romantic painting: gentle slopes blanketed in green, clouds kissing the mountain tops and quiet moments interrupted only by the rustling of wind through eucalyptus trees. Munnar lies in the Western Ghats- a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world’s richest biodiversity hotspots. It is where the conversations deepen, camera rolls filled with the shades of green and love lingers longer.
During the British colonial period, it was the summer resort of the British Government. They carved winding roads through the hills, planted miles of tea gardens, and built charming bungalows that still dot the landscape today. Situated about 1600m above sea level, Munnar is a pretty hill station and a living canvas of colonial history, biodiversity, and plantation heritage. It is a place for slow mornings, steaming chai brewed with fresh cardamom, and the sheer luxury of silence.
- Alleppey:
If Kerala has a beating heart, it might just be in Alleppey or Alappuzha. This tranquil town is the gateway to Kerala’s iconic backwaters, an extensive labyrinth of canals, lakes, rivers and lagoons. The backwaters are picturesque and deeply cultural. You will witness the village life unfolding on the banks, kids riding bicycles, women washing clothes, and fishermen casting nets with age-old skills. It is about houseboats drifting lazily on water and heritage floating on history. The town’s development was attributed to Diwan Raja Kesavadasan in the 18th century, who established it as a port and a well-connected canal system.
Known as the “Venice of the East,” it was once a buzzing trade hub especially for Coir and spices. Its ancient ports connect Kerala to Southeast Asia and beyond leaving behind a legacy that still reflects in its canals and community life. The region is well known for its spiritual touch with temples and churches showcasing the blend of Dravidian and colonial influences in their architectural style. Alleppey offers serenity to the soul with its unique history, backwaters, culture, and heritage.
- Kovalam:
Kovalam is Kerala’s original beach town, famous long before Goa gained global attention. It is the place where the waves meet the wellness. Backed in the 1930s, the Travancore royal family helped Kovalam transform into a seaside retreat and ever since it is synonymous with ayurvedic healing and beach relaxation. This place has been developed into a wellness destination with plenty of Ayurvedic spas and resorts that offer rejuvenation therapies and more.
It is also part of the Hippie Trail in the 1970s, drawing travellers seeking sun, peace, and rejuvenation. Now it is a polished paradise offering seaside yoga, traditional massages, candlelit beach dinners and quiet strolls on golden sands. It is the perfect blend of comfort and culture, a place where love is slow, salty and sun-soaked.
- Varkala:
Varkala is the place where red cliffs meet the roaring sea. Unlike other coastal towns of Kerala, Varkala feels youthful yet ancient, spiritual yet stylish. The Papanasam beach, believed to wash away sins and is a sunbathing spot with a sacred shoreline where pilgrims and backpackers coexist in harmony. Historically this town is home to the Janardhana Swamy Temple, over 2000 years old, and an important stop on the pilgrimage circuit. The air here carries chants in the morning and acoustic guitar tunes by evening.
What makes Varkala truly unique is its cliffside geography known as “Varkala Formation.” Every sunset here feels like an event, a communal pause where strangers and lovers alike gather in collective awe. Cafes, yoga retreats, boutique shops, and massage huts all sit perched high above the sea, offering sweeping views of the Arabian coastline. It is a space where healing meets holiday, perfect for romantic introspection and shared serenity.
- Trivandrum:
Thiruvananthapuram or Trivandrum is the capital of Kerala and its cultural pulse. It is the city where royalty, religion, and refined art converge. It holds a rich history and cultural heritage with various sacred and ancient temples in the world, dominating the city’s spiritual and architectural skyline. Beyond its spiritual side, it is the celebration of intellect and artistry. This city has long been a seat of power and enlightenment. Once the capital of the kingdom of Travancore, the city was a progressive hub of science, education, and the arts. Maharajas here were the patrons of music, literature, and architecture, leaving behind a legacy of palaces, museums, and academic institutions. The unique landscape of this “Evergreen City of India” makes you feel that the capital is not just a dot on the map but a window into Kerala’s cultural soul.
