Overview
The 5 Days Gangtok & Pelling Tour Package takes you through two different faces of the city of Sikkim, where the administrative capital meets the serene faces of western Sikkim. This journey is an equal mix of urban exploration and natural beauty, and provides encounters with Buddhist monasteries, sacred lakes, cascading waterfalls as well as panoramic mountain views.
Your journey starts from New Jalpaiguri Railway Station or the Bagdogra Airport, where the road to Gangtok passes through the foothills before ascending into the mountains. Gangtok is the epitome of a modern-age hill station that has managed to retain its Buddhist cultural identity. MG Road is the core of the city where you can freely walk without any vehicular movement, exploring local shops and seeing the evening atmosphere.
The special attraction of the Gangtok section is the excursion to Tsomgo Lake, a high-altitude glacial formation that is snow-covered for most of the year. The oval-shaped lake is nestled in the lap of mountains and is visited by Brahmini ducks and migratory birds during warmer months. Near this sacred water body is Baba Mandir, a memorial that has been the place of worship for those traversing these mountains.
The city sightseeing of Gangtok shows the depth of Buddhist culture of Sikkim. Enchey Monastery carries on the traditions of the Nyingma school and Do Drul Chorten contains prayer wheels and sacred objects with its traditional structure. The Research Institute of Tibetology has rare Buddhist manuscripts and artifacts, which provide information on the history of Buddhism in the Himalayas. The Directorate of Handicrafts & Handloom displays traditional Sikkimese crafts from hand-woven textiles to intricate woodwork.
The tour from Gangtok to Pelling passes through mountain roads, from where you can see on good days snow-capped peaks that stretch across the horizon. Pelling occupies western Sikkim’s landscape with different perspectives on the Himalayan ranges and access to the natural attractions that define this region.
The highlights of Pelling are water bodies and spiritual sites. Rimbi Waterfalls plunge through forest vegetation creating pools and cascades on their way. Nearby, Rimbi Rock Garden incorporates natural rock formations and landscaped areas. Kechopalri Lake has very deep religious importance among the Buddhist and Hindus. Local tradition speaks of how birds take the fallen leaves off the water surface, keeping the lake pristine. The forest-surrounded lake gives an atmosphere of tranquility.
Kanchenjunga Falls is a demonstration of the raw power of nature, especially in the monsoon months when there is a huge increase in the volume of water. The Rabdense Ruins have stories to narrate about the royal past of Sikkim, with the stone structures and walls that once formed the capital of the Namgyal dynasty. The Kanchenjunga view tower and the helipad area offer high vista points for mountain panoramas.
Throughout this tour, you experience the transformation of Sikkim from its populated capital to less crowded western reaches where nature is an overwhelming force. The itinerary includes both organized sightseeing tours and free time to explore the local markets, interact with locals and soak in the atmosphere of the mountain at your own pace. The tour is concluded with your return to the plains, completing a circuit through the cultural and natural treasures of Sikkim.
